Chess Column Moving On-line in October

According to an e-mail from the assistant editor at the Newark Star-Ledger, "the chess column is moving to a new home, but on-line. Beginning in mid-October (a date is being finalized), you can find it every week at www.nj.com/inside-jersey."

Presumably the chess column will be the one written by Steve Doyle and Pete Tamburro because Shelby Lyman's syndicated column does not cover chess inside New Jersey.

[Update from the assistant editor at the Newark Star-Ledger: "I've confirmed with the editor of Inside Jersey magazine that the chess column that will appear on-line beginning in mid-October will be the one prepared by Peter Tamburro and E. Steven Doyle."]

From Essex & Union Counties with Lev

Candidate master Lev Zilbermintz [pictured] has sent a letter to the Newark Star-Ledger regarding the Sunday chess column.

16 September 2014

Dear Editor,

It is with shock and disgust that I learned that the Star-Ledger replaced long-time chess columnists Peter Tamburro and E. Steven Doyle with Shelby Lyman. Excuse me, but the Star-Ledger has no idea how a chess column should be written!

Both Peter and Steven have been writers of the column for many years. In fact, Mr. Doyle founded the Star-Ledger chess column back in 1987. He also is an esteemed tournament director, having directed numerous chess tournaments in New Jersey/New York area.

You, editors, have to remember that Peter and Steven attempt to reach out to chess players of all ranks. The games published in their columns are mostly amateur games. I myself had a game published recently. Other chess players began their chess careers reading the chess columns of Peter Tamburro and E. Steven Doyle.

Bring back Peter Tamburro and E. Steven Doyle!!

Yesterday afternoon, I phoned NJ Advance Media and spoke with Enrique Lavin, formerly of the Star-Ledger where he was responsible for the Sunday chess column.

Enrique explained that the Star-Ledger is cutting back on its freelance writers because the newspaper can no longer afford the man-hours to edit them.

"Newark Star-Ledger" Chess Column

Newark Star-Ledger chess columnist Pete Tamburro e-mails, as follows.

To friends of chess in NJ,

If you bought the Star-Ledger this morning, you will see that Steve and I have been replaced by the syndicated "Chess" column by Shelby Lyman. If you want NJ chess news to appear in the newspaper again, it would be a big help if you wrote to the editor/publisher and the letter to the editor page about this. Some of you have had your games published or your kids' games published or just like to read state chess news. If you have a personal reference, please mention it. Form letters don't work. Please encourage your chess friends to write.

Thanks,

Pete

Could the decision by the Star-Ledger be an overreaction to the Thomas Elberling tragedy, which has attracted international attention?

A special fund has been set up to preserve the memory of this talented 11-year-old.
