My prediction is that you will find the Philidor Counter Gambit to be Philidor's crowning achievement, exceeding his many other accomplishments.
In the opening, Philidor's variation in the King's Gambit Accepted is highly regarded. In the middlegame, he contributed the smothered checkmate known as Philidor's Legacy. In the endgame, Philidor demonstrated a draw in rook and pawn versus rook endings, as well as a win in rook and bishop versus rook endings.
The Philidor Counter Gambit is every one of these, writ large, involving all 32 pieces on the board!
