PDS Chess Tournament 5/5/2007

My chess student, 12-year-old Ziping Liu (USCF 1391), won the closed section of the Princeton Day School chess tournament on Saturday with a perfect 4-0 score.

An example of his tactical style is the winning combination from his final round game as Black against Grant Oen (USCF 1290).

From the above diagram with Black to move, Ziping uncorked 1...Bxe4! 2.fxe4 Qxg3+ 3.Rf2 Qg1+.

Comparatively best for White in this hopeless position is 4.Ke2 Rxd2+! 5.Rxd2 Rxd2+ 6.Kxd2 Qxf2+ when Black has an easy win. Instead the game ended abruptly after 4.Rf1? Qe3#.
