Michael Layevskiy 1982-2017

Candidate master Michael Layevskiy [pictured] was my co-worker at Premier Chess.

Bryan Quick, executive director of the Marshall Chess Club, writes in an e-mail dated yesterday:

"Earlier this week we were deeply saddened to learn that Michael Layevskiy has passed away.

"Michael was a member of the club continuously since 2009.  For many years, he played frequently in tournaments.  He was a fierce competitor, gracious in both victory and defeat, and always happy to analyze a game or position.  One day a few years back, I recall watching him play checkers (using the pawns from two chess sets) in the back room of the club.  It turns out Michael was a checkers Master, in addition to being a life-long lover of chess!

"A wake will be held tomorrow (Friday, December 8th) from 10:30-11:30am at the Lisovetsky Memorial Home, located at 1283 Convey Island Ave in Brooklyn.  The burial will follow at the Ocean View Cemetery in Staten Island.  All are welcome to attend."
